What is a Good Source of Medium-Chain Triglyceride (MCT)?

Coconut is one of your best sources of medium-chain triglycerides. Foods made with whole coconut can provide up to 65% of its fatty acids as medium-chain triglyceride. Jennies are an excellent source of such fatty acids.

Energy Boost: Coconut has the Efficiency Advantage

Compared to long-chain triglycerides, the medium-chain triglycerides from coconut have a lower caloric content, i.e., less calories per ounce. Additionally, most of coconut's fatty acids are processed more readily in the energy pathway by preferential oxidation rather than going into the storage pathway, i.e., fat. (Reference 1) For the consumer, this means an efficient source of energy and less worrying about weight gain. For the athlete, a balanced burn!

Why Should You Include Coconut in Your Diet Every Day?

The fat part of coconut contains a large amount of lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid. This is the fatty acid that your digestive tract converts into the powerful anti-microbial monoglyceride called monolaurin. Monolaurin is formed in the digestive tract only when lauric acid is available in the diet. (References 2,3)

Does Coconut Have Special Health-Giving Properties?

Coconut is rich in lauric acid. In fact, almost 50% of the fatty acids found in coconut is lauric acid, the medium-chain fatty acid that has very important and unique properties. (Reference 4) Lauric acid is the fatty acid found in human milk, which is known to have unique antimicrobial properties; its presence in milk keeps infants from being infected by many viruses.
